2 New Job Opportunities – Sustainable Engineering, Environmental Engineering, University of Pittsburgh, tenure-track faculty positions

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions effective September 1, 2015. These positions are part of the strategic expansion intended to support research and teaching activities in the areas of sustainable engineering and environmental engineering.

For the tenure-track position in sustainable engineering, we are seeking candidates to complement the work of the CEE department and the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation (MCSI; www.engineering.pitt.edu/MCSI). MCSI recently announced a new $37.5 million endowment to support sustainability-related academics and research, including an interdisciplinary faculty cluster hire. This position is intended for applicants with fundamental expertise and research interests in sustainable infrastructure/built environment supported by big data analytics; the intersection of energy generation and use and air quality, human health, and technology; industrial ecology; sustainability of water quantity, quality and management in natural and human dominated systems; sustainability of coupled human-natural systems.

Applicants with systems approaches to sustainability are particularly encouraged to apply.

For the tenure-track position in environmental engineering, we are seeking candidates with fundamental expertise and research interests in environmental chemistry, geochemistry, physical-chemical processes, emerging contaminants, resource recovery, and/or water treatment approaches at the water-energy nexus. Exceptional candidates with a focus in other environmental engineering relevant research areas are also encouraged to apply.

Preference will be given to appointees at the Assistant Professor level but applicants with outstanding credentials will be considered at other levels, including an endowed professorship.

Candidates interested in collaborative and interdisciplinary research and teaching within the Department and/or other faculty in related focus areas in the Swanson School of Engineering, such as the University of Pittsburgh Center for Energy (www.energy.pitt.edu), are encouraged to apply.

Outstanding candidates will have the opportunity to join our vibrant and growing department of 19 faculty members, 300 undergraduate and 160 full-time graduate students (60 of which are PhD students). The successful applicants will be expected to develop and sustain a strong, externally funded research program within their area of expertise and contribute to the teaching mission of the graduate and undergraduate programs.

An earned doctorate in civil engineering, environmental engineering and science, earth science or a closely related field is required prior to appointment. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter indicating the desired position, a detailed resume, statements describing teaching and research interests and future plans, copies of three representative publications, and the names and contact information for at least three references, all in a single PDF file.

Applicants for sustainable engineering should submit applications to CEE14SE@pitt.edu.

Applicants for environmental engineering should submit applications to CEE14EE@pitt.edu.

Applications will be considered beginning December 1, 2014 and will continue until the position is filled. The University of Pittsburgh is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer.
