Meet the Speakers: Eric Beckman

Eric Beckman, University of Pittsburgh, Speaker

Meet Eric Beckman, our lunch speaker for Thursday afternoon.  I’ve been emailing him for the past couple of days to finalize his plans as a speaker for this year’s ISSST conference, and I have to say, he’s a wonderfully down-to-earth person who’s been very helpful in this process.  He’s planning a speech titled Eco-innovation, which will focus and creating better bonds between innovation and green activity moving forward, and which will tie in nicely with Ed Sawicki’s talk.

Dr. Beckman received his PhD from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in Polymer Science and Engineering.  This was followed by postdoctoral research at Battelle’s Pacific Northwest Laboratory on emulsion polymerization in supercritical fluids, and then ultimately by a full professorship at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Beckman’s research group examines the use of molecular design to solve problems in green engineering and in the design of materials for use in tissue engineering.  He has since co-founded Cohera Medical with Dr. Michael Buckley after years of collaborative research on lysine-based polyurethanes in tissue engineering, and is the primary inventor of the company’s proprietary adhesive technology.  He also (of course) has multiple awards.  He received a Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation in 1992, and the Presidential Green Chemistry Award in 2002.

Registration is still open, so get to it!  And check in again in a couple of days for information on Paul Anastas, our Closing Plenary!
